Australian medical device company Navi Medical Technologies has raised $A6.8 million to bring its neonatal catheter-placement system to US hospitals. The funding round, led by venture capital firm KP Rx with a $A4 million investment, follows FDA clearance and clinical trials at two leading children’s hospitals. Commercial sales are expected to begin this year.

The Neonav ECG Tip Location System addresses a critical challenge in neonatal and pediatric intensive care: accurate placement and monitoring of central venous access devices. These catheters deliver nutrition, fluids, and medications to the smallest and most fragile patients. Misplacement or migration of a catheter can cause serious harm, including damage to the heart or surrounding tissues, and can be fatal in neonates.

Traditional neonatal care relies heavily on X-ray confirmation to verify catheter position because existing technologies were not designed for the unique anatomy and physiology of newborns. Adult patients in the US benefit from ECG-guided catheter placement as a standard practice, but that approach has not been adapted effectively for infants until now. Neonav uses real-time intravascular ECG to guide the placement of the catheter tip and monitor its position over time. Neonav now carries the broadest indications for use among paediatric and neonatal vascular access systems, covering all central venous access devices and procedures within its cleared applications.
